Custom WordPress Plugin & PHP Development — Real-Time Air Quality Index (AQI) Monitoring
Custom WordPress Plugin & PHP Development — Real-Time Air Quality Index (AQI) Monitoring
1. What Was the Problem?
Accessing real-time air quality information for specific cities can be difficult when the data is not presented in a clear, interactive, and easy-to-use format.
The goal of this project was to develop a custom WordPress plugin that displays Air Quality Index (AQI) data for Oxapampa and Lima, Peru, using the IQAir API and interactive Leaflet maps.
The solution needed to bring external air quality data directly into a WordPress website while providing a simple way for administrators to configure the API connection.

2. Who Uses This Solution?
- Local residents: Check air quality conditions in their city.
- Travelers and visitors: Access air quality information before visiting a location.
- Environmental organizations: Present city-level air quality information to their audiences.
- Website administrators: Configure the IQAir API key through the WordPress admin panel.
- Community information websites: Display location-specific environmental data in an interactive format.
3. My Work
I developed a custom WordPress plugin using PHP and integrated external air quality data with an interactive mapping interface.
My work included:
- Developing a custom WordPress plugin for AQI data display.
- Integrating the IQAir API to retrieve air quality information.
- Displaying AQI data for Oxapampa and Lima, Peru.
- Integrating Leaflet maps to provide an interactive geographical view.
- Creating an admin panel field for entering the IQAir API key.
- Connecting the plugin’s configuration with its data-retrieval functionality.
- Organizing the code to support maintainability and future enhancements.
4. What Was My Challenge?
The main technical challenges involved connecting multiple technologies and presenting external data reliably.
- API integration: Communicating with the IQAir API and handling its responses.
- WordPress integration: Building the plugin to work within the WordPress environment.
- Map integration: Connecting city-specific air quality data with the Leaflet mapping interface.
- Admin configuration: Allowing administrators to enter and manage the API key without editing plugin source code.
- Data handling: Accounting for API errors, unavailable responses, or missing data.
- Maintainability: Structuring the plugin so that additional locations or features could be added later.
5. Why Was This Solution Important?
A custom plugin brings air quality information, location-based visualization, and API configuration together in one WordPress solution.
The IQAir API provides the external data source, Leaflet supplies the interactive mapping interface, and the admin panel makes configuration more convenient for website administrators.
This approach reduces the need for manual data entry and creates a foundation for expanding the monitoring system to additional cities in the future.
6. Final Result
The project delivered a custom WordPress plugin designed to display air quality information for Oxapampa and Lima, Peru, using IQAir API integration and Leaflet maps.
The admin panel allows the website administrator to enter the API key, while the mapping interface provides a geographical way to explore the selected cities’ air quality information.
The project demonstrates practical experience in custom WordPress plugin development, PHP programming, third-party API integration, interactive maps, and administrative interface development.
